Landscape Workday: A Way to Connect and Be Welcoming

2021-4-20 | Pastor Kurt Kincanon

*The Landscape Work Day has been canceled due to weather. Stay tuned for a possible rescheduling sometime in May!*

One of the ways ECC stewards well over the resources God has given us is by keeping much of the outdoor maintenance of our 18 acres “in house” so to speak. While we outsource some lawn treatments, the remainder of our maintenance including mowing, trimming, weed pulling, and bed maintenance is done by ECC attendees who serve the church and by the staff. Over the years, many volunteers have served, helping ECC be good stewards of our financial resources and the land God has given us, as well as helping to make ECC a “welcoming” place. When we do this, we engage in our first ECC “Touchstone” of Welcome. Welcome is an important Touchstone. At ECC: We are a place of hospitality, grace, and community for all people.

My office overlooks our parking lot and a good portion of the campus. I see a lot of cars coming and going each day and many who visit our campus are not coming into the building. Each spring and fall, hundreds of visitors come to our campus for soccer practice and games. ECC’s campus is a popular location for local law enforcement to park and complete paperwork. Several people use the campus for walking, and believe it or not, we seem to be a popular stop for people test driving a car. Every week I see someone walking around a vehicle, “kicking the tires” so to speak. Thousands of cars drive by ECC on Veterans Memorial Parkway and 9th street. Many are stopped at the stoplight and the church is what they see. Before anyone ever sees our sanctuary, they see our grounds. We want those grounds to be “Welcoming.”

ECC would like to invite everyone, young and old to join us Saturday, April 24th at 8:00 am for a Landscape Workday. ECC has quite a few landscape areas, and it is time to put down a couple of truckloads of mulch. The good news is that we have perfected the process over the years using front end loaders owned by church attenders. This makes the actual spreading of the mulch less “back-breaking” work. It is actually a good opportunity for fellowship, working alongside your brothers and sisters from ECC.

So, if you are eager to get outside, and work with your hands, and work alongside others, this is for you! Boy Scout Troop 310 will also be helping with the workday this Saturday. ECC is a chartering organization for Boy Scout Troop 310. Over the years, several young men from ECC have been a part of Troop 310 and the troop has produced several Eagle Scouts. ECC has benefited from some of their projects. Troop 310 also adopts one of our larger landscape areas at ECC. We have also opened the workday to McCutcheon High School National Honor Society Students so this is also a great opportunity to get to know some great young adults in our community.

Please let us know if you can make it by registering at ecclife.net/landscape or you can let me and the office know by emailing ecc@ecclife.net. Plan to join us at 8:00am Saturday, April 24th. Bring the same tools you would use to spread mulch at home. If you don’t have tools, don’t worry, come anyway and we will have something for you.

There are also a few landscape areas up for “adoption” if you are interested in serving ECC on a more sustained basis. Adopting a Landscape bed is roughly a twice-a-month commitment to weed and maintain your adopted area. If you would like to know more about this, please let us know at ecc@ecclife.net

I look forward to seeing and working alongside many of you on the 24th!
